Chapter Eleven

Late Friday afternoon, Zeke screwed up her courage and drove into Albuquerque to meet with the setup team for that night’s tactical plan. After the formal introductions, the team leader passed out assignments and Zeke went downstairs where a couple of staffers waited to transform her into eye candy.

They put together a top-of-the-line outfit complete with jewelry. They guessed right and the black sheath with a revealingly low cut neckline fit her perfectly. It would be appropriate for the girlfriend of a junior drug lord—sexy with a little bit of class.

Zeke tried, but there was no way to wear a bra so she just had to deal with feeling exposed. The brightly colored Donna Karan sequined jacket extended below her hips and actually felt comfortable. She worried that it might be too tight across her shoulders, but it was all right.

One of the setup team laid out various makeup items. “I have to tell you, Agent Cabot, that combination of a colored jacket and black dress really accentuates your skin tones and makes your gold-tinged brown eyes really pop. Very hot.”

“Thank you.” Zeke sat still as the woman sponged makeup beneath her eyes. She sat mesmerized by the transformation they were making. There were only a dozen times in her life that Zeke could remember fussing with hair or makeup—other than disguises. Her stint in Washington required her to attend more than one high profile event as part of her job. On those rare occasions, she was aware that her height and physique attracted a lot of attention. On one such assignment, her happily married male partner even hit on her. The office gang never let him forget it.

When the team finished fussing with her hair and makeup, they added gold jewelry including necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. The final touch was a pair of Louboutin’s peep toe black heels.

Zeke worried that she looked too much like a tricked-out prostitute, and the four inch heels made her over six feet tall. Just walking and those shoes became an Olympic challenge.

She returned to the conference room, which fell silent as she entered, followed quickly by catcalls and whistles. Zeke still blushed even though she played parts like this before and knew it was all part of the job.

Carlos Griego would be her partner that night. He arrived decked out in a fancy black suit with a very fine pin stripe, black silk shirt and a yellow tie. He had his share of gold jewelry, slicked back hair, and a pair of expensive sunglasses. Built like a running back, at six foot five, he normally towered over everyone, but tonight he was only an inch are so taller than Zeke.

They talked briefly about the game plan. Zeke’s new identity was Delta Rae, a well-financed high roller from New Orleans. The team would work as back-up with prearranged code words and signals. Since the meeting would occur at a downtown hotel, Zeke and Carlos would go in without weapons. Other agents positioned as hotel staff and another team posted outside would back them up.
